CHAPTER FOURTEEN: The Desire

The rescue had been a blur of headlights, heavy thermal blankets, and the clinical voices of the search team. By the time Arya was tucked back into her bed in Room 3B, her ankle securely bandaged and her body finally warm, the hikers’ shed felt like a hallucination.

But as she stared at the dark ceiling, the silence of the room was far louder than the storm had been. She couldn't stop replaying those last ten seconds—the way the air had vanished between them, the raw hunger in Laksh’s eyes without his glasses, and the way he had pulled back just as their lips were about to touch.

The forty-eight hours that followed, however, were a different kind of torture.

Laksh hadn't visited. He hadn't called. The "Ice King" had retreated so deeply into his frost that Arya felt the chill even from across the quad. The only communication she received were short, transactional texts at eight-hour intervals:
“Did you ice the ankle? Send a photo of the bandage compression.”
“I left a tray of protein-dense meals at the porter’s desk. Eat it.”
“The CS Department has been informed you will be working remotely today. Rest.”

Every time her phone buzzed, her heart would leap, only to sink at the cold, robotic nature of his messages. When he finally walked past her in the quad on the second day, he didn't stop. He simply paused for three seconds, glanced at her ankle with a sharp, analytical eye, said, "Good stability," and kept walking toward the laboratory.

Internal Monologue (Arya):
Why is he doing this? One minute he’s holding me in a shed and the next, he treats me like a damaged piece of equipment he’s responsible for maintaining. My heart was screaming for him not to stop, but maybe I was just... a job. A responsibility. He probably looks at me and regrets ever letting that 'Firewall' drop. Does he see me as a woman, or just the eight-year-old girl holding a stuffed octopus he has to babysit? It hurts. It hurts more than the stupid ankle.

She clutched Theo tight against her chest, the fabric still smelling faintly of Laksh’s cedar-scented soap.

Across the quad, in the shadow-drenched attic of the Physics department, Laksh was not sleeping. He was standing in front of his massive chalkboard, a piece of chalk snapped between his fingers, leaving a white streak across an unfinished equation.

His mind was a chaotic riot of calculations, and none of them made sense. He knew he was being cold. He knew he was hurting her by being distant. But every time he thought about seeing her, his pulse skyrocketed.

Internal Monologue (Laksh):
I almost lost it. I am trained to observe, to analyze, to remain objective. But in that shed, I was seconds away from breaking every rule of conduct, every boundary I’ve built over four years of silence. She was cold, shivering, and vulnerable... and I wanted to claim her. How could I have been so selfish? If I had kissed her then, would she have felt safe? Or would she have felt like I was taking advantage of her weakness? I had to pull away. I had to go cold. Because if I let myself be warm with her for even a second, I’m afraid I won’t know how to protect her from my own hunger.

Wednesday Morning – 11:30 AM

Arya was restless. Two days of his silence had pushed her to her limit. Her ankle was better—still stiff, and she had to hobble with a slight limp, but she could move. She needed her primary research hard drive; she had left it in the pocket of the charcoal coat Laksh had used to wrap her during the hike, she got a perfect excuse to visit him.

More importantly, she needed to look him in the eye.

She made her way to his attic room in the Physics block. Every step of her limp felt like a protest against his distance. She knocked softly on the heavy oak door.

"Lucky?"

A loud thud came from inside, like something heavy hitting the floor, followed by a muffled, hurried "Just a second!"

A moment later, the door swung open.

Arya’s greeting died in her throat. Her eyes widened, her jaw dropping as her brain experienced a total system-wide reboot.

Laksh wasn't wearing his suit. He wasn't even wearing a shirt. He was standing there with nothing but a dark navy towel wrapped precariously around his waist. Droplets of water from his morning shower were still tracing paths down his sculpted chest, disappearing into the dark line of the towel. His hair was messy, dark curls plastered to his forehead, and his skin was flushed and steaming.

The two days of "cold" vanished instantly in a wave of white-hot atmospheric pressure.

"You're... you're wet," Arya stammered, her gaze uncontrollably traveling down the ridges of his abs before snapping back up to his eyes.

Laksh gripped the edge of the door, his knuckles turning white. He looked caught, his usual unshakeable composure utterly shredded. After two days of avoiding her precisely so he wouldn't feel this way, here she was—standing on his doorstep while he was completely defenseless.

"I was in the shower. I didn't think you’d be up here," he rasped, his voice lacking any of its previous robotic coldness.

"I... I needed my drive," Arya whispered, her pulse visible in the hollow of her throat. She stepped a fraction closer, emboldened by the fact that he was the one looking rattled for once. "You ignored my texts for forty-eight hours, Lucky. I didn't think I needed an appointment to get my own property back."

The proximity was agonizing. The small hallway was narrow, forcing them into a space where she could feel the heat radiating off his bare skin. He smelled like soap and rain and something intoxicatingly male. It was exactly like her dream—only the "one inch" of distance felt far more dangerous.

To break the crushing tension, Arya let out a shaky, nervous giggle.

"You know, for a Theoretical Physicist, you spend an awful lot of time working on your 'Structural Engineering,'" she teased, her eyes twinkling even as she felt herself burning up. "Is that a mandatory part of the PhD? Bicep-dynamics? Because the data is... quite impressive."

Laksh's jaw tightened, a dark, heated look flaring in his eyes that made Arya's knees buckle. The "Ice King" didn't retreat this time. He stepped a fraction closer, towering over her, his presence drowning her out.

"humor, Arya?" he whispered, his voice a deep, vibrating rumble that she could feel in her chest. "It’s a poor defense mechanism for the fact that you’re currently staring."

Arya’s face went crimson. "I’m not staring! I’m... analyzing!"

"And what does the analysis tell you?" Laksh asked, his voice dropping into that dangerous, velvety register from the shed.

He leaned one hand against the doorframe, effectively boxing her in. The steam from the shower behind him made the air between them feel thick, heavy with the weight of the two days they’d spent apart. For a second, he forgot about the towel, the "babysitting" role. He looked at her mouth, and the air between them turned electric.

"The analysis says..." Arya breathed, looking up at him through her lashes, her hand instinctively moving up as if to touch the damp skin of his chest. "...that you shouldn't have stayed away for two days."

Laksh’s breath hitched. For a second, he leaned in, his nose brushing hers, his lips a hair’s breadth away.

Suddenly, the heavy door at the far end of the corridor creaked open. A group of first-year PhD students burst out, laughing and arguing loudly about a seminar.

The spell shattered.

Laksh jerked back, pulling the towel tighter as if he’d just realized he was standing in a public hall nearly naked. The "Marble Statue" mask didn't just slide back on; it slammed into place with an icy finality.

"The drive is on the desk," he said, his voice flat, professional, and entirely robotic again. He didn't even look at her face. "Take it and go back to your room, Arya. It is inefficient for you to be standing here."

He reached for the desk, grabbed the hard drive, and practically thrust it into her hand before closing the door with a firm, resounding thud.

Arya stood in the hallway, the plastic drive cold in her hand. She stared at the wood, her heart still hammering against her ribs. He had stopped again. He had gone back to being the machine.

But this time, it was different.

She turned and hobbled back toward her dorm, her steps lighter than they had been in days.

Inside the room, Laksh sank against the closed door, his head falling back as he closed his eyes, his heart drumming like a caged animal.

Analysis complete: If she stayed for even sixty seconds longer, there wouldn't have been enough logic in all of Oxford to stop him from breaking.
