CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT: The Choice

The Texas sun was a punishing, white-hot weight that made the asphalt of the Johnson Space Center shimmer like the surface of a dying star. Inside "The Vault," however, the air was chilled to a precise, clinical sixty-four degrees.

Director Miller didn’t start with a greeting. He pressed a button, and a holographic projection ignited in the center of the room. It wasn’t a map of a moon anymore. It was a projection of Earth, glowing pale blue, crossed by a jagged web of red trajectory lines.
